Day 1: From Marrakech to Ikis-n-Arous

Your adventure starts with an early morning departure from Marrakech, heading east toward the charming mountain town of Azilal. The drive-through expansive plains offer serenity and scenic beauty. After a quick lunch stop in Azilal, your ascent into the high mountains begins as you traverse the Tizi-n-Oughbar mountain pass, which is 2,230 metres above sea level. You’ll witness a splendid panorama of the extensive M’goun massif and the Oued Lkhder from this pass. Your journey takes you through several charming villages, eventually leading to the town of Agouti and, ultimately, to Arous, where you’ll meet your fellow trekkers.

You’ll be welcomed with the customary glass of tea, marking your arrival in the renowned “Happy Valley.” From here, a short two-hour hike takes you to the summer village of Ikis-n-Arous, nestled at 2,350 metres. You’ll spend your first night resting in tents in this tranquil village. Your first day will include approximately 5.5 hours of driving and 2 hours of walking.

Day 2: From Ikis-n-Arous to Tarkeddit

Your second day begins with an early morning departure from Ikis-n-Arous as you embark on an uphill journey. You’ll encounter nomads living in summer villages along the way to the first mountain pass. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to magnificent views across the Valley of Ait Bouguemez. The pinnacle of your trek is the mountain pass of Agheray, perched at an impressive 3,400 metres. This vantage point provides your first tantalising glimpse of the summit of Jebel Mgoun.

From here, you’ll descend to the base camp of Talkeddit, where you can enjoy lunch and spend the remainder of the afternoon resting and acclimating to the higher altitude. This vital preparation readies you for the much-anticipated summit day that awaits. Once again, you’ll sleep under the stars in your tent. Day 2 involves roughly 4.5 to 5 hours of walking.

Day 3: From Tarkeddit to Igli-n-Tnwout

As dawn breaks on your third day, you’ll savour a hearty breakfast before embarking on the ascent to M’goun while the muleteers take a shortcut to the next camp. After about four hours, you’ll reach an elevation of 4,000 metres, offering a magnificent view to the south of Morocco. From here, you’ll witness the famous Rose Valley and the gateway to the desert, an awe-inspiring sight.

A one-hour hike along the ridge of Mount Mgoun will lead you to the summit, standing tall at 4,068 metres. At the top, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved picnic, thoughtfully prepared by your guide, allowing you to relish the panoramic views. Following this unforgettable experience, you’ll make your way down to the camp in Igli-n-Tnwout, where you’ll spend the final night of your journey, perched at an elevation of 2,400 metres. Day 3 encompasses roughly 8 hours of walking.

Weather Conditions and Essential Tips for Your Trek

  • Weather in the Atlas Mountains can be unpredictable. Be prepared for temperature variations. Daytime can be relatively warm, but temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes, especially at night.
  • Dress in layers to accommodate temperature changes. Wear moisture-wicking and breathable clothing to stay comfortable during exertion.
  • Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are essential for navigating rugged terrain. Break them in before your trek to prevent blisters.
  • Stay hydrated throughout your journey. Carry a reusable water bottle and purification tablets to ensure a clean water supply.
